Debra Schaumberg is an American professional artist who started selling art in a gallery when she was 12 years old. She has studied traditional drawing and painting techniques and has adapted these into her own unique style.
You can immediately feel that there is something very different about Debra’s work.
These are no mechanistic or gimmicky commodities but real and deep art, spiritually and emotionally arising from the soul of the artist. Her energetic and emotionally touching oil paintings incorporate both representational and abstract elements in a method that has foundational qualities rooted in selected core concepts underpinning both impressionism and expressionism. The paintings lead us away from our hectic daily routine.
With her creativity, Debra presents us long-lasting, blessed moments of inner silence and satisfaction, letting us breath deep, within a time so much dominated by the oppression of Chronos and technocracy.
Her recent work is accomplished with a palette knife and is a representational translation of the interaction of the energy emanating from the world around her with her deepest inner self.
Of note, Debra also has achieved a global reputation for her scientific work at Harvard on prevention of blindness. Debra holds 3 advanced degrees including from Johns Hopkins and Harvard Universities.
Her artistic affiliations include: Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, American Women Artists, Plein Air Artists, Newton Open Studios, Cambridge Art Association
Debra has exhibited her work in over 25 shows, including national juried competitions such as the Annual National Juried Exhibition of the American Impressionist Society.
Selected pieces of original work are available at Dwell Fine Art, Washington, VA.
Over 150 of Debra's original oil paintings hang in collections across the US, Europe and Asia
It’s dangerous to stand behind me while I’m painting. I don’t hear or see what’s going on around me as I start to paint and I drop into a zone of deep energy emanating from a place that communicates without words. I’ve slowed down, and tuned into a heightened state of awareness where I can experience the emotional energy flow at a bodily level. I’m told I tend to back up every few seconds, without looking, holding the farthest end of a long brush or palette knife as I concentrate on synchronizing the multiple, alternating dimensions of what I’m seeing.
At some point, while moving between these planes of reality, I become intensely sensitive to subtly pulsating shape patterns of light and dark and the saturation, color, and value within an unfolding array of details where my inner eye instinctively composes the idea. In my process I experience the energy flow that connects all things together, and emanating from this energy, my paintings explore the most basic part of our humanity, our time alone, and our connections with ourselves, others, and with the world around us.
Remember that magic you felt as a kid? That feeling that anything was possible and you could do whatever you dreamed? For me, paintings bring that feeling alive. Painting is my soul work – that one practice we all hopefully find that enriches our souls. My paintings are an act of living with intent; they remind us that dreams are valid and that passions can be followed, and that we can make our own rules.
For the past few years, I’ve been working exclusively with a selection of palette knives, which encourages looseness and the ability to place both bold and broad strokes alongside more subtle passages of color, creating variations in texture and energy in the paintings.
All my paintings are accomplished using an alla prima technique allowing me to stay attuned to the energy that marks the validity of dreams and passions that connects with the deepest parts of us.
They are depictions not of what “is” but of how the world looks to me when I see it in front of myself all dressed in paint. No matter what the subject, the process arises from the interaction of the energy emanating from the subject with the core emotions it touches within me. The variation in depictions is influenced by the variety of energy, feelings, lives and souls that we all interact with as we move through our lives.
